The work of the Schlechty Center is all about the right thing to do—if you care about public education, if you care about the future of our schools, if you care about the future of our democracy. It is so gratifying to see school leaders learn and apply their learning to real transformation efforts in districts across the country and to be a member of an organization committed to making a difference in the lives of children. The work that we do is hard, but it is so engaging and rewarding that it doesn't seem like work.

I have a passion for helping young people become leaders. I love to spot potential in young people and provide, in some small way, that little nudge—coupled with encouragement and guidance—which might make a difference in their professional and personal lives. There are so many young educators who would be the absolute best advocates for children, if given the right opportunities to lead.

ROLAND CHEVALIER is the former superintendent of St. Martin Parish Public Schools in Louisiana. A skilled trainer and thoughtful leader, Roland was actively involved in the development of principals and other leaders in his district and has been personally involved with several leadership development initiatives including those of Stephen Covey, Southwest Education Development Laboratory, the Danforth Foundation, the Center for Creative Leadership, and the Schlechty Center Superintendents Leadership Network. Roland’s administrative experience has included assignments beginning as assistant principal, principal, director of curriculum and instruction (PK-12), director of personnel, and superintendent of public schools in St. Martin Parish, Louisiana. Roland is highly regarded in the Southeast as a change leader and has earned a high level of trust amongst his colleagues.
